Overcoming Inadequate Study Budgets in Clinical Research
Inadequate study budgets are the leading reason investigators stop practicing clinical research. Not surprisingly, a recent industry study revealed that over 40% of sites accept the original study budget presented by the CRO/sponsor, no matter how inadequate. The willingness of sites to accept budgets that do not cover costs and provide an adequate profit margin only serves to further exacerbate the problem.
Whether new to research or a seasoned professional, our team of experienced budget negotiators can help secure fair compensation for your research efforts. At the same time, we include our budget negotiation services fee as part of the standard administration fees requested in the sponsor budget.
Benefits of outsourcing Budget negotiation
Outsourcing budget negotiation to a specialized provider like Elevate Clinical Research Solutions offers several key benefits:
Identification and Collection of Hidden Study Costs: By thoroughly analyzing study documents, we uncover and secure necessary funds for items that are often overlooked. Elevate also works closely with sites to understand site specific processes/considerations to ensure all costs associated with conducting a trial are accounted for in the budget.
Improved Visibility into Financial Feasibility of Conducting the Study: By identifying studies where compensation does not meet costs and provide a reasonable profit margin, sites can avoid financial strain and ensure fair reimbursement for their efforts. This approach helps safeguard the viability of research activities and promotes more equitable funding practices.
Maximize Study Budget & Reduce Timelines: When compensation accurately reflects the scope and complexity of the work involved, it ensures that research sites are fairly reimbursed for their efforts, fostering a more sustainable and motivated research environment. By thoroughly understanding each site’s costs and leveraging Elevate’s robust industry knowledge, site budgets are improved in an efficient manner which also decreases start-up timelines.
How it works
1.
Submission of Study documents
The process begins with the site sending the study budget, CTA, ICF, protocol, and CA (if applicable) to Elevate for negotiation.
2.
Budget Development
Elevate then develops an internal bottom line budget and negotiated budget to be applied to the sponsor budget.
3.
Budget & Payment terms edits
Elevate marks up the sponsor budget and payment terms to include initial requests to be negotiated with CRO/sponsor.
4.
budget Negotiation
Elevate contacts CRO/sponsor to negotiate budget edits with client involvement customized to institutional process/preferences.
5.
Final Budget Review by site
Final budget presented to site for review. Once approved, CRO/sponsor is informed.

Our budget team brings expertise to the process, increasing the likelihood of securing fair compensation and addressing potential budget issues effectively. Even if your site has strong negotiation experience, many sites find it helpful to offload workload due to resource constraints.
